A boutique firm, on purpose

We are JRO Corlaw, a boutique firm of corporate lawyers with offices in Bogotá, Colombia and Miami, United States, and experience in more than 8 countries. We work with demanding companies through a select team, not through volume.

What we are

Legal knowledge and business understanding, in the same conversation

We advise companies operating in domestic and international markets: startups, SMEs and established businesses looking for a legal partner who understands not only the law, but the business behind it.

Boutique means you speak with the professional handling your matter, not with a queue. It also means we take on the work we can actually do well, and say so when a matter belongs somewhere else.

Meet the team

Criterion

Written for the decision, not for the file

An opinion that does not tell you what you can do is half an opinion. We set out the options, the risk of each one and what it depends on.

Jurisdictions

Structures that have to work in two places at once

We work in Spanish and English on structures that must hold up both in Colombia and abroad — and we say plainly when a Colombian figure has no exact equivalent in the other system.

Two practices

Legal, accounting and tax under one roof

A transaction usually has a legal side and a financial one. Here both are reviewed inside the same process, instead of two reports that never meet.

Response time

An answer within 24 hours

Tell us about your situation and someone from the firm gets back to you in less than one business day. No obligation, just answers.

How we work

Four steps, and you know where the matter is at each one

1 · We listen

You describe the situation and the decision you need to make. We reply within 24 hours saying whether it is something we should handle, and who would handle it.

2 · We scope it

Before starting we agree on what the work covers, what it does not, and what it costs. No open-ended engagements.

3 · We deliver in writing

Options, the risk of each and what it depends on — in the language of whoever has to read it, and marking what still needs to be confirmed.

4 · We stay on it

Filings, negotiation, follow-up with the authority. You always know who has the matter and what stage it is at.

Doing business in Colombia

Some Colombian legal concepts have no equivalent in English

Calling an S.A.S. an LLC, or a tutela an injunction, is the fastest way to give a foreign client the wrong expectation. Where there is no exact equivalent we flag it instead of forcing the translation. A good part of our work is with foreign companies and individuals doing business in Colombia.

Offices

  • Bogotá Colombia — corporate, trademarks, technology, litigation, accounting and tax
  • Miami United States — company formation, USPTO filings and cross-border structuring
  • Languages Spanish and English. Documents in the language of whoever has to sign them.
